Doug was born in Dumfriesshire. He is continually inspired by his native Southern Scotland surroundings, hills, rocks, water and ‘wood’. As a child, he would ‘borrow’ his father’s joinery tools to try and make something or other. He did not have the knowledge and skills which he now possess, but had the same strong urges that he still retains to this day, to ‘make’. He started selling his work commercially in 1980 and is continually exploring and developing new areas in wood and design. The ‘functional art’ which he is currently producing take the form of small informal pieces, which have been designed with a practical purpose in mind yet retain pleasing proportion and form. Having studied the shape and characteristics of the timber, the low horizontal structures seem determined by the wood itself Whilst Doug welcomes the challenge of commissions for traditional furniture, he equally revels in the freedom to borrow from nature and produce organic pieces. The craftsman can merely be a catalyst between nature and art, he sees the potential and displays it. Being a musician as well as a craftsman, he has combined these two disciplines and makes his own bodhráns. He also plays ‘wooden flute’, he is addicted to ‘Sylva’. Doug Lanchbery
